Abstract
THE following statement appeared a short time ago in an article in NATURE. Throughout the country we find societies, field clubs, local museums, &c., all of which are more or less actively engaged in the pursuit of knowledge, local inquiries, or explorations, &c., I fear this flattering description must have arisen from the writer not having a practical acquaintance with local societies.
