Jan Swammerdam, 1637–80

Abstract

JAN SWAMMERDAM was born at Amsterdam on February 12,1637, and died there on February 17, 1680. He was the son of a prosperous apothecary, Johan Jacobsz Swammerdam, with whom he is frequently confused, and the grandson of J. Theodorus, who assumed the name of Swammerdam, and was born in the Dutch village of Swammerdam or Swaden-burgerdam (now Zwammerdam) on the Old Rhine.
