Abstract

IN an earlier communication1 reference was made to a U.S.S.R. war-time expedient, namely, accelerated sprouting of potato tubers, which followed the removal of the periderm. This procedure could perhaps be best understood in the elucidation of sprouting itself. The contrasting concepts of changes in oxygen pressure and membrane permeability advanced by some American and Russian workers (private communication from Sir John Russell) register merely the pulse of metabolic changes rather than any specific physiological reactions.
