RECENT GENETICAL EXPERIMENTS WITH YEASTS

Abstract

IN recent years geneticists have been turning more and more to the lower organisms for research material. A genetical study of the yeasts was begun some years ago at the Carlsberg Laboratory in Denmark and, more recently, by Lindegren and his collaborators in the United States and also in India. The yeasts offer certain advantages in that they are unicellular, many generations can be obtained in a short time and they can be grown under controlled environmental conditions which may be altered at will. The difficulty lies in the lack of control over sexual reproduction, but recent work indicates that this difficulty may be overcome.
