Animal Tissue Culture with a Synthetic Medium

Abstract

IN a recent communication in Nature, Jensen1 reported some experiments on animal tissue cells in vitro employing, in parts, protein-free media. He observed with very small explants (embryonic heart tissue) a modest degree of survival and migration. This stands in contrast to the long-continued growth described by P. R. White2 of animal tissue cells in an entirely synthetic medium. However, Jensen raises certain criticisms of White‘s technical procedure with which we concur. Our own experiments were carried out last year, in order to substantiate such criticism.
