'Data'

Abstract

Nature of September 3 contained a letter under this heading. In it Prof. A. V. Hill asks that the word be used in its original sense, that is, as the plural of datum, for which he gives the "Oxford English Dictionary" definition "A thing given or granted" and so on. He adds that there may sometimes be an excuse for regarding data as a collective singular in the same way as agenda.
