Abstract
IN the course of some experiments involving the addition of solutions of sulphydryl inhibitors to cultures of Paramecium bursaria, it was noticed that a wide range of response was obtained from concentrations just below a lethal level. Further examination has shown that the period of survival of any one culture when exposed to a given concentration of a sulphydryl inhibitor is dependent upon the illumination of the culture, both immediately before and during the experiment.
