Remanent Magnetism of Varved Clays from Sweden

Abstract

A RECENT discussion on the remanent magnetism of rocks1 revealed that its origin is not yet fully understood. Some investigations2 do, however, suggest that the polarization direction of sediments may be due to orientation in the earth's field during deposition of contained ferromagnetic particles. Such rocks may therefore provide information about the earth's field in past times. The measurements on Swedish varved clays described in this communication were made in order to test these ideas further.
