Synthesis of Ribose in Animal Tissues

Abstract

RECENTLY, we described experiments showing the synthesis of deoxyribose in guinea pig liver extracts by the coupling of a triose with acetaldehyde1. The substitution of glycolaldehyde for acetaldehyde as the 2-carbon compound might be expected to lead to the synthesis of ribose instead of its deoxyderivative, and this has now been shown to occur.
