Demonstration of a Diffusible Fruiting Factor in Myxobacteria

Abstract

RUNYON1 gave a demonstration of a diffusible factor inducing the formation of fruiting bodies in Myxamoebae. Attempts to demonstrate a similar factor in Chondromyces by Bonner2 are inconclusive because they resulted in mechanical disturbance of the swarm and of the surface of the medium, which are sufficient, in my experience, to stimulate the formation of fruiting bodies (cf. also Stanier3).
