Abstract
A RECENT paper by Dr. L. Harrison Matthews1 has raised several interesting points regarding the biological study of mammals in Africa. Most stress was laid on big game studies, and the fact that they must be done before the game has disappeared owing to the advance of civilization. In South Africa two big game animals, Equus quagga Gmelin, the true quagga, and Ozanna leucophaea (Pallas), the blue antelope, are already extinct as a result of indiscriminate hunting, while many other groups like the bontebok (Damaliscus pygargus (Pallas)) are approaching extinction.
