Isolation of Kynurenine and 3-Hydroxykynurenine from Human Pathological Urine

Abstract

IN 1951, 3-hydroxyanthranilic acid was isolated from the urine of a patient with pulmonary tuberculosis after administration of 1-tryptophan1. This result caused us to examine the urine of various subjects, including some tuberculous patients not receiving special diet or supplementary administration of tryptophan. By means of paper chromatography it was found that the urine of normal humans contains very small quantities of 3-hydroxyanthranilic acid, while in eleven out of thirteen patients affected with pulmonary tuberculosis, excretion was definitely higher1.
