Electrophoretic Measurement of the True Zeta-Potential of Arsenious Sulphide Sol in the Region of Slow Coagulation

Abstract

ACCORDING to Bikerman1, for “rod-shaped particles with half spherical ends” the true ζ-potential and ζa, the potential calculated from the Smoluchowski equation, are linked by the following equation where χ represents the specific surface conductivity, S the bulk specific conductivity of the intermicellar fluid, L the length and r the radius of the cross-section of the particle. The equations of Henry2 and Booth3 for spherical particles and sufficiently large value of the product of the radius of the particle and the reciprocal of the thickness of the electrical double layer can be expressed in the form
