Restoration of Sodium-deficient Frog Nerve Fibres by an Isotonic Solution of Guanidinium Chloride

Abstract

IT has been known for some time that certain quaternary ammonium ions are able to restore the ability to conduct impulses to the small myelinated and unmyelinated fibres (B and C fibres) of frog nerve that has become inexcitable in a sodium-free medium. Quaternary ammonium ions do not restore the excitability of the large myelinated fibres (A fibres)1.
