Carotenoids and Reproduction in Pyronema confluens

Abstract

ROBINSON1 found that light was necessary for both orange pigmentation and fruit-body (apothecium) formation in Pyronema confluens Pers. ex Tul. Since he was unable to obtain these effects separately, he postulated a causal relationship between them. Later work on the effects of light on Pyronema 2 has not been concerned with testing this hypothesis. Recent work by one of us3 has shown that there is no direct relationship between pigmentation and spore production in Fusarium oxysporum, and it appeared useful, therefore, to investigate the problem in P. confluens.
