Abstract
J. KOLBUSZEWSKI1 has suggested that the porosity of a bed of sand grains formed by a single fall of the grains in air varies inversely with the velocity of fall. We have confirmed the generality of this observation and have extended it in experiments in which an existing bed of fine-grained dry solid is subjected to interrupted vibration.
