Abstract
THE development of the flame ionization detector for gas chromatography has made it possible to investigate in detail the production of ethylene by tissue slices and mitochondria from fruits. We have constructed a gas chromatograph for this purpose following the design of Meigh1 ; but by modifying certain details the sensitivity has been increased some tenfold, making it possible to detect 0.03 µl. of ethylene per litre of air in a 1-ml. gas sample. The improved sensitivity can be attributed largely to the amplifier and to the use of a stationary phase having very low volatility.
