Macroscopic Swelling of Vermiculite Crystals in Water

Abstract

EXPANDING lattice layer silicates belonging to the smectite and vermiculite groups form complexes with organic cations by replacement of the inorganic cations normally present in interlayer positions in these minerals1–6. The formation of a complex, and sometimes also the orientation of the organic ions within the lattice, can be inferred from changes in the basal spacing of the mineral as shown by X-ray diffraction.
