Immuno-Electrophoresis of Insulin-binding Antibodies

Abstract

THE presence of insulin-binding antibodies in the sera of insulin-resistant diabetics has been shown by a large number of investigators¹. It has also been shown by Berson et al.² and Kalant et al.³ that using paper electrophoresis the binding was mainly in the γ-globulin, while using free-boundary electrophoresis the binding was mainly in the β-globulin. The disadvantage of using paper as a supporting medium is discussed in work now in course of publication⁴. In view of the differences of opinion as to which of the serum proteins is responsible for the binding of insulin it was decided to apply the techniques of immuno-electrophoresis with subsequent autoradiography to the study of diabetic sera.
