Abstract
Eaton, Liu and their colleagues have provided evidence that the causative agent of a certain type of human primary atypical pneumonia, namely, that in which a proportion of patients develop serum agglutinins against Streptococcus MG and human erythrocytes at 4° C., is filterable, can be propagated in the lung of the chick embryo, and produces lung lesions when inoculated into hamsters and cotton rats by the intranasal route1. Some uncertainty exists about the nature of this organism. The strains studied had a large particle size (between 180 and 250 mµ as measured by filtration1b); some were sensitive to streptomycin2 and all to tetracyclines3.
