Opal in the Animal Body

Abstract

RECENT work on opal-phytoliths1–4 has led to searches for these microscopic bodies of amorphous silica in the body of a sheep. This is a typically herbivorous animal that ingests significant quantities of silica as integral parts of its plant food.
