Formation of Hæmosiderin and its Relation to Ferritin

Abstract

SUPPORT for the hypothesis that the protein moiety of hæmosiderin is the same as that of ferritin can be found in the literature1,2. Iron tetrad (or, more recently, ‘hexad’3,4) structures in a protein matrix characteristic of ferritin have been reported in electron photomicrographs of tissue sections variously interpreted as ferritin, hæmosiderin, aggregates of ferritin, etc.3,5,6. It is not uncommon, therefore, to consider both ferritin and hæmosiderin as being more or less identical. However, the results of our biochemical and histochemical work lead to opposite conclusions7,8.
