Cell Retention and Incidence of Carcinoma in Several Portions of the Gastrointestinal Tract

Abstract

THE epithelial cells of the stomach, small intestine and colon are subject to rapid renewal1. In the mucosa of these organs, cells are produced in proliferative zones which are rather sharply defined. Maturing cells and fully mature cells move in coherent sheets towards the lumen of the gastrointestinal tract or, in one area of the stomach, into the depth of the glands. Generation times of the epithelial cells vary from about ½ day to a few days.
