Abstract
THE hyperdiploid Ehrlich ascites tumour, described by Hauschka et al.1, contains about 5 per cent hypertetraploid cells. A varying amount of non-tumour cells (leucocytes) always occurs. By counter-streaming centrifugation a fraction of hyperdiploid cells could be obtained free from hypertetraploid cells which were concentrated into another fraction2. Inoculated into another mouse this fraction developed into a tumour with a higher proportion of hypertetraploid cells than the original one. Repeated fractionation followed by inoculation of this fraction increased the mean number of chromosomes per cell to about twice the original one, the mean number of chromosomes being estimated as the amount of deoxyribonucleic acid phosphorus (DNAP) per cell.
