Abstract
BY means of starch-gel electrophoresis Smithies1,2 demonstrated the occurrence of distinct fast and slow variants of transferrin, the iron-binding β-globulin fraction of human serum. Several different electro-phoretically distinct transferrin components have been identified. They are termed in order of electrophoretic mobility towards the anode B0, B0–1, B1, B2, C, D0, D4, D1, D2and D3. The discovery of the type D4 by Harris, Penington, Robson and Scriver3 after all the other D types is the reason for the use of the designation D4 for a transferrin migrating between D0 and D1 Parker and Bearn4 designated as B0–1 the new variant which they recently found with a mobility intermediate between B0 and B1.
