Whole-Body Skeletal Metabolic Response on Local Skin Burns

Abstract

BURNS, depending on their degree and extent and other complications, such as shock and infection, may lead to serious local and systemic changes in the whole body, including disorders in metabolism of water, electrolytes, proteins, etc. Some of these effects have been recorded by several authors1,2, but still too little is known about them and about the mechanisms which control them. Practically nothing is known about the metabolic disorders in the skeleton of the burned patients. In only few reports3–5 mention has been made of structural changes in bone seen on roentgenograms in burned patients, such as osteoporosis, periostitis, bone necrosis, osteomyelitis and periarticular calcifications and ossifications.
