Formation of Alumina from a ‘Hydrogen’ Alunite

Abstract

IN a process for making pure alumina which is being investigated by us1, the intermediate product is a basic aluminium sulphate, averaging 39.5 per cent alumina, 40.5 per cent sulphur trioxide and 20 per cent water. This material is isomorphous with the alunite series, giving an X-ray diffraction pattern almost identical with the potassium and sodium compounds, all having the general formula R2O, 3Al2O3, 4SO3, 6H2O.
