Abstract
BACTERIOPHAGES ϕX1741, S13 and ϕR2,3 are the sole members of a unique group. Their nucleic acid consists of single-stranded DNA as opposed to the RNA or double-stranded DNA of other phages. They are very small (about 250 Å.) and recent electron microscope studies on ϕX1744 and ϕR5,6 show that they are icosahedra with distinct morphological sub-units at the apices. These phages have aroused a great deal of interest, and the isolation of additional similar ones would be useful in that wider comparative studies would be possible.
