Abstract
IN the course of spectroscopic investigation on the basic chemistry of lignins in wood and in unbleached kraft and sulphite pulps, we have recently obtained new evidence which suggests the existence of the long-sought covalent bond between lignin and carbohydrate in these materials. It appears to be an acetal or hemi-acetal bond, and, on cleavage, liberates a ketone group in the lignin. The work of others1 indicates that the point of attachment may be mainly on the hemicelluloso portion of the holo-cellulose.
