Abstract
THIS communication describes a vascular permeability factor of renal origin. Our attention was directed to the existence of this factor by the chance observation that totally nephrectomized rats became extremely thirsty after intraperitoneal administration of saline extract of the kidney. It was afterwards shown that this thirst developed concurrently with a fall in plasma volume associated with leakage of plasma proteins from the vascular compartment.
