Abstract
THE work of Travell1 and of Brodie et al.2–5 has given rise to the theory that the absorption of many drugs occurs by the passive diffusion of their non-ionic, lipoid-soluble form. This concept has been extended to include transfer across other cell membranes6,7. Jacobs8 and others9,10 have explained on this basis the effect of pH gradients on the biological distribution of certain drugs.
