Effect of Ligands on the Rate of Reduction of Cobalt(III) Complexes by Radiolytically Produced Hydrogen Atoms

Abstract

THE reduction of transition metal complexes by hydrated electrons has recently been investigated. It has been found that ligands affect the rate of reaction between eaq and the metal ions1. As this reduction is obviously an outer sphere process2 the effect of different ligands on the rate of reduction of these complexes is a measure of their efficacy in transferring an electron to the central atom. Aquated electrons and hydrogen atoms are the most elementary reducing agents in aqueous solutions. Hydrogen atoms have been found to react differently from electrons in many reactions3, thus it was of interest to examine the effect of ligands on the rate of reaction of hydrogen atoms with a series of metal complexes in order to compare the mechanisms of reduction by these most reactive reductants.
