Abstract
SZENTÀGOTHAI1 reported the presence of axo-axonic endings on fibres entering the lateral geniculate body from the retina. Bizzi and Brooks2 have shown that in the unanaesthetized, unrestrained cat irregular groups of waves could be recorded simultaneously from the pontine reticular formation and the lateral geniculate body during the desynchronized phase of sleep. The latter waves could no longer be recorded in the same conditions if the optic fibres were allowed to degenerate3. Recently, Andersen, Brooks, Eccles and Sears4 have produced evidence pointing to the existence of presynaptic inhibition in the ventrobasal thalamus on stimulation of peripheral nerves.
