γ-Radiolysis of Aqueous Mandelic Acid Solutions

Abstract

A PREVIOUS study1 of the γ-radiolysis of deaerated, 0.1 per cent solutions of DL-mandelic acid showed that the primary products can be accounted for in terms of addition and disproportionation reactions of two radicals, namely, PhC(OH)CO2H and PhCHOH. The formation of the former radical was anticipated from the mechanism of radiolysis of other hydroxy-acids2, whereas the mechanism leading to the formation of the latter radical was not clear and it was tentatively suggested1 that it might arise from decarboxylation of the PhC(OH)CO2H radical. Recently published results, however, have indicated a more probable mechanism for the formation of the PhCHOH radical.
