Abstract
MANY compounds are specific inhibitors of protein synthesis and the mechanism of their action has been much investigated. Not all compounds which inhibit protein synthesis in micro-organisms do so in ribosomal systems of mammalian origin, for example, chloramphenicol1–3. In yeasts an interesting dichotomy has been described between materials inhibiting mitochondrial but not ribosomal systems, for example, tetracycline and macrolides, and vice versa, for example, cycloheximide4.
