Abstract
Calamoichthys and the better known Polypterus comprise the most primitive group of living ray-finned fishes, and are regarded as palaeoniscid relics1–4. Some of the earliest reports on the morphology of the fish pituitary gland concern this group5–7. In re-evaluating the morphology of the pars distalis in primitive actinopterygian fishes, a portal vascular system between the inferior surface of the infundibulum and the sinusoids of the pituitary gland was discovered in Calamoichthys.
