Abstract
WOOLLEY suggested that the serotonin receptor of uterus and stomach is a ganglioside, because neuraminidase destroys the sensitivity of those tissues to serotonin, and the sensitivity can be partially restored by the addition of brain gangliosides1. This assumption that a material which restores activity is the naturally occurring receptor can be questioned, and we have therefore investigated the sialic acid of the uterine muscle membrane and the occurrence or otherwise of gangliosides.
