Abstract
Of nine antimicrobial agents introduced intravenously into sixteen dogs, only the basic macrolides erythromycin and oleandomycin readily crossed the prostatic epithelium into the prostatic fluid. A suitable drug for curing chronic bacterial prostatitis with bladder bacteriuria must be lipid soluble, have a pKa of 8.6 or more, and have optimal activity against Gram-negative bacteria at pH 6.6.
