Abstract
NUMEROUS viruses have been isolated from simians1–5, but studies to determine the role of these viruses in the aetiology of disease in simians have proved relatively fruitless. Epidemiological studies indicate that a large percentage of monkeys support viruses which resemble human adeno and enteroviruses. Tyrrell et al.6 have identified SV-17 as the aetiological agent responsible for a conjunctivitis and rhinorrhoea in Erythrocebus patas monkeys. Here we describe the isolation of an adeno virus from an outbreak of conjunctivitis in newborn Macaca mulatta.
