Generation of Magnetic Fields in the Primordial Fireball

Abstract

THE origin of the magnetic field of the galaxy is a perplexing problem1. In this article I show that weak magnetic fields (compared with the present typical intensity of 10−6 G in the galactic disk2,3) can be generated in the fireball of the early universe. Possible methods of amplification are at present speculative and I shall discuss this aspect elsewhere.
