Abstract
STRIKING changes in the morphology of the hair root have been described in children admitted to hospital with acute kwashiorkor1, while studies with young men fed diets free from protein showed not only that the morphological changes described are due to protein deprivation but also that they occur while serum albumin levels are still normal2,3. We tried to find out whether such morphological changes would occur early enough and regularly enough in pre-school children with mild to moderate malnutrition to be of value in community health programmes.
