Biological Sciences: Cytotoxic Efficiency and Effect on Tumour Growth of Heterospecific Antilymphocytic and Antitumour Sera

Abstract

IN studies of the behaviour of tumours in mice treated by the injection of lymphoid cells together with various forms of temporary immunosuppression, it has been observed that administration of antilymphocytic serum alone inhibits the growth of intra-strain transplants of a mammary carcinoma (Fig. 1) but enhances the growth of a chemically induced sarcoma. To investigate possible reasons for these findings we have studied the cytotoxic efficiency of antilymphocytic (ALS) and antitumour (ATS) sera on lymphoid and tumour cells in vitro, and their uptake by lymphoid and tumour tissue in vivo, in relation to their effect on tumour growth. A full report is being presented elsewhere1.
