Adaptation to Hamsters of Neurotropic Measles Virus from Subacute Sclerosing Panencephalitis

Abstract

SUBACUTE sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE), a fatal neuropathy of children, has gained prominence recently because of its presumed aetiological association with measles virus1. Several successful isolations of the virus from affected brain tissues have been reported2,3. Preliminary characterization studies on these isolates have failed to show differences from classical measles virus strains.
