Differential Binding Properties of Cytochrome c: Possible Relevance for Mitochondrial Ion Transport

Abstract

Similarities between the binding properties of cytochrome c and the permeability properties of mitochondria suggest that cytochrome c may be a transport carrier of the inner mitochondrial membrane. Cytochrome c could be the basis of a mechanism by which mitochondrial activities are regulated by the metabolic state of the cell. Variations in the structure of cytochromes c from different species may result from evolutionary selection for particular ion-binding properties.
