Evolution of Marginal Basins

Abstract

THE occurrence immediately behind island arcs of small ocean basins such as the Sea of Japan and the Sea of Okhotsk is linked with the evolution of lithospheric features of the Earth, and probably the convection currents in the mantle1. More recent oceanographic data together with global tectonic hypotheses2 have renewed geophysical interest in these basins. We wish to present a model for their formation and evolution.
