Quantitative Method for assessing One Symptom of the Withdrawal Syndrome in Mice after Chronic Morphine Administration

Abstract

FEW quantitative methods exist for assessing the effects of withdrawing morphine from addicted laboratory animals. The aim of the experiments described here was to assess whether a method which depends on the number of characteristic vertical jumps made by mice after morphine withdrawal1 could be used as a measure of the withdrawal syndrome. This simple method has now been found to give reasonably repeatable and consistent results.
