Experimental Decomposition of Algae in Seawater and Early Diagenesis

Abstract

ALTHOUGH there have been many studies of organic decomposition processes in the marine environment and their effect on water chemistry1–11, few geochemical investigations of these processes have been attempted in controlled conditions12,13. Our observations of organic decomposition in interstitial waters of carbonate sediments in Harrington Sound, Bermuda, prompted us to investigate these processes in the laboratory.
