Abstract
OF the several theories of sieve tube translocation at present being investigated, the surface action theory of van den Honert1 appears to have the least favour. Opponents to this theory have pointed out that the surface area requirements of such a system are beyond the capacity of the sieve tubes2, but calculations based on evidence from electron micrographs make this a contentious issue.
