Abstract
INTEREST in leptonic resonances has been generated recently by both experimental and theoretical investigations1,2. Anomalies in bubble chamber data have indicated a possible π±μŦ resonance of mass ≈ 429 MeV and width <15 MeV in the final state of both vp→πμp interactions and K0L→πμv decays1. Theoretical estimates of the effects of such a resonance have been made (S. C. Chhajlany and S. Pakvasa, unpublished), and it has been suggested (S. Barshay, unpublished) that the low measured limit on the rate for K0L→μ+ μ− (refs. 3 and 4) could be a consequence of an interfering πμ intermediate state. Studies of finite quantum field theory with an indefinite metric suggest (E. C. G. Sudarshan, unpublished) that leptonic resonances, if they exist, could manifest themselves in γe, πe, πμ and πν channels.
