Platelet Shape Change and Aggregation

Abstract

A PREVIOUSLY described1 modification of the optical method of Born allows the simultaneous measurement of scattered and transmitted light during the course of action of different inducers and inhibitors of platelet aggregation. Using this technique we have distinguished the shape change from platelet aggregation, using thrombasthenic platelets, which are unable to aggregate in the presence of adenosine diphosphate (ADP) or purified calf-skin collagen2. These platelets respond to bovine fibrinogen3 and one of our objectives was to establish whether this latter compound allowed the shape change of thrombasthenic or normal platelets.
